Join us for a live taping and listening-room concert for the Monks Jazz Showcase: Night Four! Featuring performances lead by Muthabug, the Elena Diaz Quintet, and Mockjaw. 6:30 PM • Muthabug 8:00 PM • Elena Diaz Quintet 9:30 PM • Mockjaw Muthabug | Muthabug is a collective born from medicinal music mantras meant to soothe the soul. Blending elements of jazz, hiphop, and soul, the collective brings together a groove based sound steeped in ancient traditions. Their music weaves inflections from forgotten folkloric stories and whispers of mysticism with shared sentiments of the present-day collective. Elena Diaz | Elena Diaz is a vocalist and musician from Houston, Texas, known for her rich voice—often compared to Karen Carpenter and Rosa Passos—and her ability to sing in multiple languages. A former member of the prestigious Houston Children's Chorus, Elena has graced iconic stages like The Hobby Center for the Performing Arts, Stude Concert Hall at Rice University, and The Grand 1894 Opera House, performing alongside luminaries such as Maureen McGovern, Heather Headley, and Shirley Jones. She has also opened for Alejandro Escovedo and shared the stage with Jon Herington of Steely Dan and Adam Scone of Sharon Jones and The Sugarman 3. In 2017, Elena moved to the South of France, performing throughout the French Riviera and Europe while exploring Latin jazz with her band, The FR Collective. Beyond performing, she has made her mark as a producer and co-writer, including a song featured in a film nominated at the Cannes Film Festival in 2022. Mockjaw | Formed in the vibrant music scene of Austin, Texas, Mockjaw is led by a group of musicians who’s connections were forged in the halls of the Butler School of Music, and the many live music bars across the city. Since their inception last year, the band has gained recognition for their approach to jazz fusion. They were honored with a nomination for Best Jazz Artist at the Austin Music Awards, solidifying their status as one of the most promising upcoming acts in the genre. While generally incorporating many different musical influences on stage for the Austin nightlife, the group is excited to have the opportunity to display their dedication to jazz as an art form on the Monks stage.
